Attention Undergraduate Students

 

The School of Nursing has been awarded funds from the Department of Health and Human Services for the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) Program.  Scholarships may be used to cover actual costs reasonably necessary for the student’s attendance at the school.  Costs include tuition, fees, books, equipment, other expenses required by the school, and reasonable living expenses. Scholarships are provided to eligible students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are enrolled as full-time nursing students. 

 

1.     You must be taking 12 hours to qualify as a full-time student.

2.     You must be a US citizen or lawful permanent resident of the US.

3.  You must have a current application (FAFSA) on file in the financial aid office. 

4.  You must meet eligibility requirements for SDS. 

To receive a SDS award you should qualify as environmentally or economically disadvantaged. 

Environmentally disadvantaged is defined as a student that comes from an environment that has inhibited them from obtaining the knowledge, skill and abilities to enroll in and graduate from nursing school.  Examples of environmentally disadvantaged students include but are not limited to:

_____ Member of a racial and/or ethnic minority

_____ Single parent head of household

_____ Graduated from a rural or inner city high school

_____ Have a physical disability

_____ First generation in your family to attend college

_____ Come from a non-professional family

 

Economically disadvantaged is defined as family income at or below the following levels:

5.  Participants of the FACES (Nursing Workforce Diversity) Project who meet eligibility guidelines are given preference.

 

6.  Applications may be obtained from the School of Nursing and must be returned to the Director’s office (CKNB 201) by SEPTEMBER 3, 2003.   Eligible applications received by July 15 will be considered for fall awards.
